In late July, Alberto Mazzeo, president of the Trapani municipal council, outlined a timetable for two contentious measures: the dismissal of several councilors and a motion of no‑confidence against Mayor Giacomo Tranchida. In early August, political friction surfaced in nearby Mazara del Vallo. New public works assessor Rino Giacalone publicly accused former assessor Vito Torrente and Mayor Salvatore Quinci of neglecting public works, mishandling waste‑collection, and allowing unsafe nitrate levels in drinking water. Quinci retaliated, labeling Giacalone a “serial demolisher” and accusing him of betrayal. The episode was linked to broader criticism of Mazzeo’s handling of waste‑tax reforms and the pending motion of no‑confidence, underscoring continued instability across Sicily’s local governments.
