Sierra Leone political and socio-economic reforms

Overview

Sierra Leone continues to pursue political, economic, and social reforms. In the political sphere, President Julius Maada Bio facilitated the return of former President Ernest Bai Koroma to the country after more than two years abroad. Supported by ECOWAS and regional leaders from Nigeria, the move was described by Ambassador Michele Maria Valenti as a “vital step toward national reconciliation and political stability.”

Economic and labor initiatives include strengthening partnerships with the World Bank to expand energy access, human capital, and infrastructure. To facilitate cashless international travel and reduce reliance on physical foreign exchange, the homegrown fintech initiative Flot has launched a Visa-partnered card.

Regarding labor migration, the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security has issued a temporary suspension of all overseas recruitment activities utilizing the Guinea transit route. This follows allegations that private agencies and unidentified individuals may be bypassing legal regulations. The Ministry has launched an investigation, requiring licensed agencies to submit documentation regarding the recruitment and deployment of workers. To address these challenges, Labour Minister Umaru Napoleon Koroma has engaged with Guinean authorities to seek safer, more coordinated passage for Sierra Leoneans traveling to employment opportunities in Arab countries. The Ministry also announced plans to establish a dedicated committee to monitor overseas employment and migration processes.

Social and educational reforms continue through the transition of Government Technical Institutes into community colleges and the presentation of national youth skills and employment agendas at international forums, such as the Youth Knowledge Forum in Morocco.
