Simona Halep post-retirement transition

Overview

Former world No. 1 Simona Halep is transitioning to life following her official retirement from professional tennis in February 2025. Her career, which included two Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, concluded after a period of legal challenges regarding a doping suspension. While a reduction in her suspension by the Court of Arbitration for Sport allowed for a potential return, she ultimately retired due to physical challenges and difficulty regaining her previous competitive level.

Since retiring, Halep has focused on personal interests and a more normal lifestyle away from the media spotlight. She has begun practicing golf, a hobby she identified as a primary goal for her post-tennis life.

In recent reflections on her departure from the sport, Halep expressed a desire to reclaim her independence and live free from constant media scrutiny and judgment. She noted a shift in focus toward her personal life and building a family with her partner, entrepreneur Dorin Mateiu. Regarding her transition, she remarked, “For many years I belonged to everyone, and now the time has come to belong to myself.”

In late September 2026, she celebrated her 35th birthday, marking her first birthday since her departure from the sport.
