On July 30, 2026, armed gunmen opened fire on a private vehicle in Escuinapa, Sinaloa, wounding a mother, her infant son and the child's grandmother. A few days later, on August 2, a series of murders erupted across Culiacán and Escuinapa, including a stabbing in Culiacán and a decapitation in Escuinapa. By mid-August, violence intensified. On August 11, a security officer was abducted in Culiacán. On August 15, Culiacán experienced a wave of violence resulting in at least six deaths, including a high-profile incident near the State Government Palace where two men were killed after their vehicle was intercepted by armed subjects. That same day, a transit agent was wounded in Culiacán, and two shootings occurred in Mazatlán, resulting in the death of a 35-year-old man. Reports by August 23 indicated that the wave of violence resulted in 15 recorded femicides during August. However, by August 25, the number of violent deaths of women in the region rose to 20 following three separate shooting attacks in Escuinapa and Mazatlán. These included the discovery of a young woman in a vacant lot in Escuinapa and two women found dead inside a residence in Mazatlán. Attacks in Mazatlán have been reportedly linked to territorial disputes between criminal factions. On August 27, Governor Graciela Domínguez Nava inaugurated the Unit for Analysis and Context of Feminicide at the State Attorney General's Office. State Attorney General Claudia Zulema Sánchez Kondo reported that Sinaloa has recorded 71 feminicides so far in 2026. On August 29, human rights activist Alma Rosa Rojo Medina, founder of the collective Voces Unidas por la Vida, and her daughter were shot by armed men in the Esthela Ortiz neighborhood of Culiacán. On September 9, Culiacán experienced ~~further~~ waves of violence involving armed attacks, pursuits, and vehicle arson.
