Singapore biological computing prototype development

Overview

A consortium including the National University of Singapore, Cortical Labs, and DayOne has developed a biological computing prototype in Singapore. The system, which utilizes a 20-unit biological computing rack known as the CL1, integrates approximately 16 million lab-grown human neurons with traditional silicon hardware.

Derived from stem cells, these neurons are maintained via specialized life-support systems that regulate temperature and nutrients. Microelectrodes allow the biological neural networks to exchange electrical signals with conventional electronics. The project, often referred to as “wetware,” aims to explore whether biological systems can perform computing tasks, such as those required for AI, with significantly higher energy efficiency than traditional semiconductor-based systems.

While currently functioning as a research platform, the technology is intended to move biological computing “from research to commercial application,” with potential future uses in drug discovery, cybersecurity, robotics, and biomedical research.
