Singapore energy resilience and investment trends
Overview
Singapore is experiencing significant shifts in its energy landscape driven by global volatility and a push for resilience. In early 2026, solar energy investments saved the nation an estimated US$97 million in fossil fuel import costs during the first five months of the year. These savings were largely attributed to avoiding natural gas import premiums during the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz.
However, the nation remains heavily dependent on imported fossil fuels for over 95 per cent of its power generation. This reliance led to US$8.1 billion in additional gross fossil fuel costs in the six months following the outbreak of the US-Iran war.
In response to these pressures, including a 17.5 per cent increase in regulated electricity tariffs in the third quarter of 2026, Singaporean businesses are pivoting toward increased energy spending. A report indicates that 94 per cent of surveyed businesses intend to increase energy investments over the next year to bolster resilience against potential energy crises.
