Singapore Strait maritime collision

Overview

On September 17, the Panama-flagged bulk carrier First Margaux collided with the Chinese fishing vessel Luqing Yuanyu 108 in the Singapore Strait. Video footage of the incident shows the 229-meter bulk carrier striking the starboard quarter of the 49-meter fishing vessel, causing the smaller boat to heel sharply and take on water. Despite the impact, the fishing vessel remained afloat and reached a nearby berth.

Maritime authorities, including the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, are investigating the cause of the collision, with early reports suggesting the bulk carrier may have been attempting to overtake the slower fishing vessel. While no injuries or fatalities were reported, the Philippine Department of Migrant Workers confirmed that 40 Filipino seafarers aboard the First Margaux are safe and are coordinating with the Philippine Embassy in Singapore for repatriation.
