Siracusa water supply disruptions

Overview

On 26 July 2026 a DN 600 water main serving central Siracusa ruptured inside a private property, forcing Aretusacque to shut the conduit for safety. The break left much of the historic centre, including Ortigia and the Pizzuta district, without water. Civil Protection deployed tankers, and hotels, B&Bs and restaurants reported cancellations as tourists avoided a city without water during the peak August season.

By 29 July 2026 Aretusacque had identified additional leaks on the Dammusi‑Teracati mains that supply Ortigia and Borgata. Emergency teams repaired the faults, refilled the reservoirs and began air‑purge operations while monitoring pressure. Authorities asked residents to limit non‑essential water use, and officials expected normal service to resume once the system was fully re‑balanced.
