Siraya indigenous recognition and cultural celebrations
Overview
Following the Executive Yuan’s official recognition of the Siraya people as Taiwan’s 17th indigenous group on July 30, cultural celebrations have emerged in Kaohsiung. The inaugural Siraya Culture Festival was held at Fongshan Dadong Wetland Park, featuring musical performances, traditional crafts, and exhibits documenting historical encounters from the 19th century.
To support this recognition, the Kaohsiung Indigenous Peoples Affairs Commission established service windows across 38 district offices to assist with identity recognition. Approximately 1,500 individuals have applied for recognition, with registration at household offices pending final central government approval.
Subsequent celebrations, such as the Nawnamu Baksa Siraya Art and Music Festival in the Neimen District, continued to highlight Siraya history and missionary records through exhibitions and performances.
