SK Group AI infrastructure expansion and restructuring
Overview
SK Group is advancing its artificial intelligence infrastructure strategy through major financial and structural reorganizations. SK Telecom and SK Broadband have approved the spin-off of their AI data center and submarine cable businesses into a new entity named SK Horizon.
To fund this expansion, SK Telecom secured approximately KRW 3.08 trillion ($2.23 billion) in investment. This includes 1.2 trillion won in new shares to expand infrastructure and 1.88 trillion won from the sale of existing shares. SK Telecom will maintain a 51 percent stake and management control, while KKR will hold 29 percent and the IMM-Stonebridge consortium will hold 20 percent.
SK Horizon will manage eight existing data centers in locations such as Seocho, Ilsan, Bundang, Gasan, Centum, Yangju, and Pangyo, alongside facilities under construction in Ulsan and Guro, totaling 318 megawatts of capacity. While management asserts the spin-off will improve SK Broadband’s financial health by transferring data center-related debt to the new entity, the SK Broadband labor union has raised concerns. The union is demanding that a portion of the 1.88 trillion won from share sales be reinvested into SK Broadband to ensure competitiveness in AI transformation and media services, while also calling for compensation for affected employees.
In a parallel move, SK Ecoplant is absorbing its subsidiary, SK Ecoengineering. This integration aims to combine plant design and engineering with construction and project management to manage the full lifecycle of semiconductor factories and AI data centers.
