Slatina femicide and police investigation
Overview
Following the fatal killing of a 35-year-old woman in Slatina, Croatia, authorities have launched investigations into police procedural failures. The victim had previously reported her husband for domestic violence and threats in July, and had contacted police for assistance on the night of the murder. Although a patrol arrived shortly after her call, the woman was killed approximately one hour later.
Interior Minister Davor Božinović confirmed that five police officers and managers have been suspended from duty pending disciplinary proceedings for suspected “serious breaches of official duty.” An extraordinary inspection revealed deficiencies in the organization of the suspect search, the deployment of forces, and communication between the local station and the operational center.
The case concluded with further tragedy when the suspect committed suicide in a Zagreb prison on September 12. Investigations continue into the circumstances of the suicide and the institutional failures that preceded the crime.
