Slovak economic and political tensions

Overview

Slovakia continues to face economic stagnation despite real wage growth outpacing inflation. Prime Minister Robert Fico has attributed this to a heavy dependence on the struggling German economy and has expressed frustration over the Jaslovské Bohunice nuclear project, suggesting it is being “torpedoed.”

Political tensions are intensifying as the government finalizes budget preparations for 2026 and 2027. The administration is prioritizing infrastructure, nuclear energy, and drought combat. However, coalition partner SNS leader Andrej Danko has signaled a “hot autumn,” demanding the abolition of the transaction tax, a return to 10% and 20% VAT rates, and significant pension increases.

Opposition parties, including SaS and Progresívne Slovensko, remain critical of the government's fiscal direction. SaS MP Ondrej Dostál has specifically criticized the decision to abolish the transaction tax, arguing it was “poorly implemented from the start” and questioning how the government will compensate for lost revenue amidst existing budgetary gaps. Dostál further accused Fico of attempting to claim credit for economic growth through this single measure.

Recent data indicates a cooling labor market. In the second quarter of 2026, the number of unemployed persons rose by 5.8% year-on-year to 152,800, bringing the unemployment rate to 5.6%. The industrial, construction, and retail sectors saw the largest job losses, with long-term unemployment accounting for approximately 65% of all unemployed individuals. Regional disparities are evident, as the Banská Bystrica region reported an unemployment rate of 9.8%.

Concurrently, the real estate market has seen transaction prices increase by 13.6% year-on-year, driven by high demand, low supply, and investor activity.
