Slovakia is experiencing heightened political instability characterized by internal government disputes and legal confrontations. Initial tensions involved the dismissal of Lukáš Machala from the Service Office by Culture Minister Martina Šimkovičová, who cited a breakdown in trust. Concurrently, Prime Minister Robert Fico entered a dispute with Prosecutor General Maroš Žilinka, whom Fico pressured to resign. This conflict escalated following the General Prosecutor’s Office decision to close an investigation into the legality of MiG-29 fighter jet and military equipment donations to Ukraine made by a previous caretaker government. Prosecutors determined the transfer was lawful, concluding the actions did not involve intent to cause harm or illicit profit. Prime Minister Fico criticized the decision as politically motivated, labeling the Prosecutor-General a “political puppet” of the opposition and suggesting the prosecution office should be “gifted to Ukraine.” ~~Fico has also signaled intentions for significant legislative changes to the functioning of the prosecution service.~~ In response, Prosecutor General Žilinka described Fico’s rhetoric as an “unprecedented and extremely dangerous attack” on law enforcement, warning that such inflammatory attacks could lead to a “great tragedy.” ~~The Prosecutor’s Council added that political pressure on investigative bodies undermines~~ Adding to the ~~rule~~ crisis, the ruling coalition faces internal instability. Fico has demanded guarantees from the SNS party to maintain a parliamentary majority following a dispute regarding the potential replacement of ~~law and creates societal uncertainty.~~ Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba. Fico warned that without assurances of a stable majority, he may withdraw his proposal to dismiss Taraba to prevent a government collapse.
