Slovakia and Czech Republic security exercises

Overview

In early September 2026, Slovakia and the Czech Republic conducted large-scale security and civil protection exercises.

Slovakia initiated the ‘Tiene v oblakoch’ (Shadows in the Clouds) drill in the Zemplín region. This two-day national exercise involved police, firefighters, paramedics, and armed forces to simulate responses to drone attacks, airspace violations, and mass casualty incidents. The drill focused on agency coordination, decision-making during emergencies, and the evacuation of students and social service clients.

Following this, Czech authorities organized a 24-hour border security operation along the 251-kilometer border with Slovakia. The exercise involved over 600 police officers, military reserves, and customs officials conducting inspections of vehicles, passengers, and international trains, as well as monitoring unofficial crossing points.
