Slovakia COVID-19 testing fund fraud investigation

Overview

Slovak authorities have launched an investigation, known as Operation Faktúra, into the fraudulent disbursement of funds intended for mobile COVID-19 testing sites (MOM) during the pandemic.

An employee of the Ministry of Health has been charged with allegedly entering fraudulent invoice data into the ministry’s accounting system between March and December 2021. While the invoices utilized the identification details of legitimate operators, the payments were diverted to unauthorized bank accounts. The estimated loss to the Ministry of Health is approximately 1.78 million euros.

The Bureau of Combating Organized Crime (ÚBOK) is leading the investigation. Former Health Minister Marek Krajčí noted that the alleged activity occurred after his term ended in March 2021. Public commentary has suggested that scrutinizing the pandemic period is a positive step for law enforcement to improve state response capabilities for future crises.
