Slovakia energy efficiency and subsidy programs
Overview
Slovakia has faced challenges balancing energy price compensations with long-term efficiency. Since 2022, the state has spent nearly 5 billion euros on subsidies to offset energy costs, though experts note these measures have not successfully reduced household consumption. Meanwhile, demand for energy efficiency programs has been high; the ‘Obnov dom’ program saw its annual application quota exhausted in 45 minutes.
At the municipal level, cities like Komárno are utilizing EU funds to install photovoltaic panels and battery storage to reduce grid reliance. To address the high demand for residential upgrades, the Slovak Innovation and Energy Agency (SIEA) is launching the ‘Green Homes II’ project (also referred to as ‘Zelená domácnostiam II’). This initiative provides 28.6 million euros in subsidies for renewable energy equipment.
To manage the process, the SIEA has implemented a two-stage registration system to reduce time pressure on applicants. Starting October 26, households can submit a simplified form regarding installation sites and property ownership. From November 2, applicants can officially reserve funds through a single-click request. Due to significant changes in support conditions, previous applications are no longer valid, and all interested parties must re-register through the new system. Once funds are reserved, households have 45 days to complete their installations.
