Slovakia HPV cancer prevention initiative
Overview
Slovakian health and education institutions, supported by President Peter Pellegrini, have signed a memorandum titled ‘Let’s get HPV-caused cancers out of Slovakia.’ The initiative seeks to develop a national plan to combat cancers caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), following data showing nearly 9,500 new cases and approximately 5,300 deaths in the country over the last five years.
To address current vaccination rates—which stand at 52.8% for girls and 32.0% for boys among those born in 2010—the Ministry of Health has set a target to reach a 90% vaccination rate for girls by 2030. The government also aims to increase coverage among boys. Health Minister Kamil Šaško has designated 2026 as the ‘Year of Prevention,’ with the Ministry of Education working to improve health literacy in schools to assist parents and young people in making informed medical decisions.
