Slovenian emergency medical system reforms

Slovenia has implemented a new emergency medical assistance system designed to increase efficiency through the strategic deployment of emergency physician vehicles. Under this model, physicians are dispatched only when medical dispatchers determine their presence is necessary for complex emergencies, rather than accompanying every intervention. In Ptuj, physicians are now involved in approximately one-quarter of the 500 monthly interventions. This reorganization has reduced average mobile unit access times from over 16 minutes in 2023 to less than 15 minutes. The national rollout included 42 physician vehicles across 36 municipalities and a heliport in Kočevje, representing a 3.69 million euro investment.

Despite these systemic improvements, responders in Maribor face physical delays caused by illegally parked cars, concrete barriers, and outdated elevators that cannot accommodate standard 2-meter stretchers.

Following these developments, North Macedonian Health Minister Sašo Klekovski visited Slovenia to discuss implementing similar European models within the Macedonian healthcare system. Discussions between Klekovski and Slovenian Health Minister Tadej Ostrc focused on cancer early detection, radiodiagnostics, and the Slovenian National Dispatch Center model, which utilizes a triage index to classify urgent cases.
