In response to these concerns, the White House issued an executive order titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History,” which led to a 162-page report criticizing the Smithsonian. Additional actions taken by the administration include ordering the Department of the Interior to install signage regarding alleged historical inaccuracies and threatening to withhold federal funding. Federal officials, including Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, have expressed that they “cannot in good conscience continue to support” the institution under its current leadership. Museum associations have described this period as involving unprecedented political interference regarding the institution's interpretive ideology.
