Lonnie Bunch III, the first African American and first historian to serve as Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, has announced his intention to retire by the end of the year. Bunch, who has been with the institution for nearly 38 years, stated his decision is driven by personal reasons and a desire for a new chapter. He noted to the New York Times, “Now’s the time.” His retirement follows an 18-month period of intense political pressure and scrutiny from the Trump administration regarding the museum system’s presentation of American history, specifically concerning Black history. The administration has accused the institution of promoting a “radical, activist ideology” and “radical left propaganda.” In response to these concerns, the White House issued an executive order titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History,” which led to a 162-page report criticizing the Smithsonian. Additional actions taken by the administration include ordering the Department of the Interior to install signage regarding alleged historical inaccuracies and threatening to withhold federal funding.
