SNL UK satire of Ed Sheeran

Overview

Saturday Night Live UK has aired multiple satirical sketches targeting singer Ed Sheeran. Initial segments parodied Sheeran as a figure attempting to avoid political stances to prevent alienating fans, following controversies such as the removal of Macklemore from his tour lineup after pro-Palestinian remarks.

During her hosting debut, comedian Amelia Dimoldenberg continued the mockery, describing Sheeran as a “world-famous red-headed puppet with a hand up his arse telling him what to say.” This commentary drew on Dimoldenberg’s previous interactions with the singer on her series, Chicken Shop Date, and addressed the fallout from the Loop Tour.

The tour faced scrutiny after Macklemore was reportedly removed following pro-Palestinian statements. Reports suggested that Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft pressured Sheeran to dismiss the rapper. Sheeran responded by stating the decision rested with the venue and promoter rather than himself, noting his desire to maintain a “place of safety and sanctuary” for fans by avoiding political debates. Following the incident, other support acts withdrew from the tour in solidarity. Sheeran has since issued an apology to fans in Philadelphia regarding the difficult decisions and subsequent criticism.
