São Gonçalo residential fire fatalities

Overview

In late September, a house fire in Guaxindiba, São Gonçalo, resulted in the deaths of two young sisters, aged 2 and 6. The blaze occurred in the early hours of September 30 while the three children were alone in the residence. Neighbors assisted in rescuing the children, though the home was completely destroyed.

A third sibling, aged 4, was uninjured and has been placed in the care of the Guardianship Council. Following the incident, the children’s mother was taken by military police to the 74th DP (Alcântara). The Civil Police stated she will face charges for “abandonment of an incapable person resulting in death.” The case has been referred to the justice system, though authorities have not officially confirmed the cause of the fire.
