São José do Rio Preto municipal administration controversies

The municipal government of São José do Rio Preto has faced scrutiny regarding the management of public resources and the continuity of social programs.

In early October, the Public Defender’s Office and the Public Ministry demanded explanations concerning the cancellation of a “popular restaurant” project. Despite an investment of R$ 1.4 million intended for property leasing and equipment to serve vulnerable populations, the project was suspended. This occurred amid reports that 5,600 residents face food insecurity.

Later in the month, the administration issued conflicting statements regarding municipal sports programs. While the Municipal Sports Secretariat initially announced the suspension of sports classes for adults and seniors until January 2027 due to budget adjustments, the Mayor and Vice-Mayor later asserted that projects would continue for over 5,000 students. The administration has not clarified if previous decisions to dismiss professionals or suspend “Auxílio-Atleta” payments, which support 291 beneficiaries, remain in effect.
