A building collapse in the Penha neighborhood of São Paulo, Brazil, resulted in the deaths of six people. The incident occurred during the early hours of a Saturday when an 11 or 12-story construction site collapsed onto an adjacent residence that functioned as a sewing workshop.

The victims included several Bolivian nationals and one Paraguayan national. Among the deceased was a pregnant woman. Two survivors, a man and a seven-year-old girl, were rescued from the debris with minor injuries.

Investigations are focusing on the history of the construction project, which began in 2019 and had faced fines and judicial orders for irregularities since 2021. While heavy rains occurred at the time of the collapse, authorities noted that weather alone may not be the sole cause. Reports indicate that a permit issued in 2023 was contingent upon the demolition of an old structure, but preliminary findings suggest that the required demolition had not actually been completed.

Legal and administrative actions have followed, including the arrest of a partner from the construction company, New Home, and the suspension of a municipal employee for allegedly filing a false report regarding the demolition of the previous structure. The São Paulo City Hall has opened an inquiry through the Municipal Comptroller General to investigate failures in inspection and oversight processes.
