Legal proceedings and investigations have surfaced regarding multiple incidents of violence and misconduct involving the São Paulo Military Police. In São José do Rio Preto, a second suspect was arrested in connection with the May murder of Weberton Rodrigo de Araujo, a man experiencing homelessness who was reportedly beaten, shot, and set on fire. In a separate case, the Military Justice system has convicted Captain Francisco Carlos Laroca Júnior and Corporal Fabiano Rizzo for the April 2023 homicide of Sergeant Rullian Ricardo da Silva during a dispute over work schedules. ~~Laroca received a 22-year sentence~~ The conviction includes charges of qualified homicide and ~~Rizzo~~ procedural fraud. The report rejected claims of self-defense, finding evidence of qualified intentional homicide.
