Social assistance for elderly residents in Turkey
Overview
Local community and municipal efforts have been directed toward improving the living conditions of elderly residents in various Turkish districts.
In Mersin’s Erdemli district, a community-led initiative provided a permanent two-room house for 69-year-old Fatma Dinç, who had lived in a makeshift structure for 33 years. Following the demolition of her unstable shelter, Dinç stated, “For the first time, I have a key; for the first time, I have a house.”
In Antalya’s Kepez district, municipal teams conducted a sanitation operation for a 70-year-old woman, identified as Ü. Y., who had been living amidst accumulated waste for approximately eight years. After removing six truckloads of debris and transporting the resident to a state hospital for medical treatment, the municipality announced plans to renovate the home and provide new household items.
