Social integration and migration in Catalonia

Catalonia is addressing various social integration and demographic challenges through localized initiatives and broader structural management.

On a local level, new occupational and social inclusion centers have been established to support community integration. In Manlleu, the Sant Tomàs Foundation opened a 260-square-meter facility following a 700,000 euro investment, while the Generalitat provided 400,000 euros to equip a residential unit in Sant Vicenç de Torelló. In Sabadell, the organization CIPO expanded its labor inclusion network by opening a catering and restaurant establishment designed to provide work opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

These efforts occur against a backdrop of significant demographic shifts, as foreign-born residents now comprise 25.1% of the Catalan population. While migration drives economic activity and helps offset an aging population, it has created pressures on housing, healthcare, education, and social services. Experts highlight ongoing debates regarding social cohesion, linguistic integration, and the need for more consistent migration policies from the Spanish state and the European Union.
