Sodexo restructuring and job cuts in France

Overview

Sodexo announced a restructuring plan in France as part of its ‘Shift & Grow 2030’ strategy, which aims to increase competitiveness and digital innovation through a 1 billion euro investment by 2030. The plan involves cutting 1,097 jobs, representing roughly 4% of the company’s French workforce. This includes 963 positions via a job protection plan following voluntary departures, and 134 roles at the corporate headquarters in Issy-les-Moulineaux.

Labor unions have responded with significant opposition. The FO union described the announcement as a ‘true earthquake,’ while the CGT union labeled the decision ‘unacceptable.’

Following the announcement, employees and unions, including the CGT, organized strikes and demonstrations at the company’s headquarters. Union representatives have alleged that the layoffs are ‘stock market-driven’ measures designed to boost shareholder returns rather than being necessitated by economic hardship. There have also been suggestions from unions that administrative functions might be relocated to Portugal to reduce costs.
