The federal government has imposed emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), suspending the provincial government led by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). President Asif Ali Zardari invoked constitutional articles to address a deteriorating security situation, transferring executive authority to Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and an advisory council. Prior to the formal takeover, tensions escalated as federal ministers suggested legal requirements for emergency rule had been met, with Information Minister Attaullah Tarar accusing the KP administration of being a ‘B-team’ for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Chief Minister Sohail Afridi rejected these threats, stating he would rather resign than compromise his ideology. During this period, PTI faced internal friction following reports of potential leadership changes, though party leadership denied such claims. Afridi also announced a peaceful Long March for October 4, criticizing federal economic mismanagement. Following the formal imposition of governor’s rule on October 11, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif traveled to Peshawar to chair an Apex Committee meeting with senior civil and military ~~officials.
