Solar energy expansion safety and ecological challenges

The expansion of solar energy infrastructure is encountering various safety and ecological challenges. In Germany, concerns have been raised regarding fire hazards associated with photovoltaic (PV) systems. While silicon panels are not flammable, plastic components can ignite, and firefighters face risks from electric shocks and debris. Additionally, pigeons nesting under modules can create fire hazards through the accumulation of nesting materials and droppings, leading experts to recommend bird protection grids.

Insurance data in Germany shows rising damage costs in the construction sector, with an average claim cost increasing from approximately 10,710 euros in 2010 to 13,739 euros in 2024. Investigations have linked significant damage to the use of non-UV-resistant cables and a lack of arc fault protection in inverters.

On an ecological level, large-scale solar expansion in China has been linked to declining bird biodiversity. Research suggests that clearing farmland and pastureland to meet solar targets has negatively impacted native and migratory bird populations across more than 2,300 counties.
