Solar photovoltaic panel recycling challenges and efforts
Overview
The solar energy industry is addressing the technical and environmental challenges associated with the decommissioning and recycling of photovoltaic panels. As panels age or suffer damage, their efficiency declines, necessitating management strategies for end-of-life equipment.
Recycling is complicated by the bonded nature of materials such as glass, aluminum, polymer layers, silicon, copper, and silver. While recovering glass and aluminum is straightforward, extracting high-value materials like silicon and silver remains technologically and economically difficult.
Efforts to implement a circular economy are underway, notably in Australia. PV Industries operates a facility in Sydney capable of processing roughly 200,000 panels per year, recovering up to 90% of a panel’s weight. Furthermore, the Australian government is supporting a $24.7 million national pilot program to recycle up to 250,000 panels and establish a national recycling framework.
