Solar-powered borehole installations in northern Ghana

Overview

Various organizations and religious institutions have commissioned solar-powered mechanized boreholes across northern Ghana to combat water scarcity.

In the Wa Municipality, the Ghana Maritime Authority and Humanity First Ghana installed boreholes, including one at T. I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School, to improve student hygiene and reduce waterborne diseases like typhoid. This initiative also targeted the communities of Chansa, Biihee, and Boli.

In the Upper West and Upper East Regions, additional projects have been implemented to address social stability and resource access. In the Sissala West District, a borehole provided by CLIP Ghana and Acting for Life aims to foster peace between host communities and Fulbe herders by preventing livestock from destroying farmlands. Meanwhile, in the Kassena-Nankana West District, Engage Now Africa and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints established facilities in five communities to reduce the travel time required for women and children to fetch water.
