Piracy activity off the coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden has surged to its highest levels since 2013. Since the beginning of 2026, at least 15 attacks have been recorded, with eight occurring in the Gulf of Aden since May. Experts suggest the escalation is driven by a security vacuum caused by the redirection of international naval forces toward Middle East conflicts. Following the September 29 rescue of the Palau-flagged MT Honour 25, which resulted in the deaths of five crew members, further details have emerged regarding the survivors and the diplomatic response. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez expressed condolences for the deceased, noting that while 44 seafarers were freed across the MT Honour 25, Sibu 1, and MT Eureka, 22 seafarers remain in captivity aboard the vessel ASANA. Dominguez has called on the international community to increase protections for maritime workers. The Indonesian government confirmed it did not meet any pirate demands during the rescue of the MT Honour 25 crew, who were held for nearly six months. Witjaksono Adji, the Indonesian Ambassador to Kenya and Somalia, stated that Indonesia prioritized diplomacy over direct negotiations with pirates to avoid violating international regulations and providing a ‘reward’ for such crimes. Instead, Indonesia maintained dialogue with the Somali central government, Puntland State authorities, and local NGOs. Repatriation and medical efforts are ongoing. Four Indonesian crew members arrived at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on October 6. The ship’s captain, Ashari Samadikun, expressed deep grief On October 9, Bogor Police coordinated a medical evacuation for 25-year-old crew member Piki Mutakim. Following assessments by a medical team, Mutakim was transported to RS Said Sukanto Bhayangkara Hospital in East Jakarta for intensive care and apologized post-traumatic rehabilitation due to the families of the five crew members who died during the hijacking, during which the crew faced severe shortages psychological impact of food, water, and medicine. In Pakistan, three remaining crew members—Imran Ali, Muhammad Yasin, and Syed Husain Yousuf—were flown to Addis Ababa accompanied by embassy officials, with expected departure for Karachi on October 7. his captivity.
