Somalia security and AUSSOM transition

Overview

A political and military crisis in Somalia’s South West State has placed the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) in a difficult position. Following the removal of former South West President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen, violent clashes erupted in Baidoa between loyalist forces and federal and regional troops. The Federal Government requested AUSSOM assistance as the security situation deteriorated, amid reports of expanding ties between local militias and Al-Shabaab.

While AUSSOM has been directed to maintain political neutrality regarding domestic fighting, its aviation units continue to provide logistical and reconnaissance support to Somali Security Forces.

As the mission faces uncertainty regarding future United Nations logistical support and long-term funding, Somali Defense Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi has asserted that national forces are capable of resisting Al-Shabaab independently. Fiqi stated that “Al-Shabaab cannot capture even a single village if AUSSOM leaves Somalia,” emphasizing that government forces and the public are working together to confront the militant group.
