Sony officially launched the FX5 full-frame cinema camera on 22 July 2026. The model features a 16.6-MP stacked Exmor RS sensor, BIONZ XR2 processor with a dedicated AI unit, and supports 5K Open-Gate recording and internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW. Pricing for the body-only version was established at approximately $4,898 in the US, £4,699 in the UK, and €5,399 in Germany. In Indonesia, the camera is priced at Rp95 million. Following the launch, demand far exceeded Sony's initial forecasts. This surge influenced the market for related models; for instance, Amazon data showed the FX3 price rising by approximately $400, narrowing the price gap between the FX3 and the FX5. In August 2026, Sony halted FX5 shipments due to undisclosed quality control issues related to the electronic viewfinder. Further complications emerged as shipping schedules were pushed from mid-August to September. These delays are attributed to high preorder volumes in Japan, reports of potential quality control issues, and a 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture, which impacted operations at Sony’s largest image sensor plant. Consequently, retailers like B&H have updated expected delivery dates to September, and the camera has appeared as ‘Temporarily out of stock’ on Amazon in the United States. By mid-August, Sony confirmed the shipment halt, noting the camera was not currently available for purchase. On 19 August, the company announced a postponement for the FX5 release, originally set for 21 August, citing “production issues”. This delay also affects related accessories, including the DVF-EL1 OLED viewfinder and XLR-H2 handle unit. Additionally, Sony Marketing Corporation announced price increases across its Cinema Line in Japan effective 1 September 2026, driven by rising raw material, manufacturing, and logistics costs.
