On 18 August 2026, ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot made history as the first French woman to conduct an extravehicular activity (EVA) on the International Space Station. Partnering with NASA astronaut Anil Menon, the mission, designated as US Spacewalk 97, lasted approximately six hours and twenty-three minutes. The primary objective was the replacement of the Space-to-Ground antenna (SGANT) on the station’s Z1 truss segment. While the duo successfully dismantled the aging antenna, they were unable to complete the full replacement of the new unit due to stubborn bolts and electrical connectors. On 25 August 2026, Adenot and Menon conducted a second six-and-a-half-hour spacewalk to complete the replacement of the faulty SGANT. The mission was successful; the astronauts installed the new antenna, which is essential for maintaining high-speed data transmission and communications. Initial checks indicated the new antenna is functioning with “good power and data transmission capabilities.” On 31 August 2026, Adenot and NASA astronaut Jessica Meir completed an all-female ~~spacewalk~~ spacewalk, the sixth such mission in history, lasting approximately six hours and 49 minutes. Serving as the lead spacewalker, Adenot ~~successfully~~ replaced a retroreflector on the Harmony module to assist with spacecraft docking and navigation.
