The South Aegean Region has introduced several initiatives aimed at regional development and skill enhancement for residents of the Cyclades and Dodecanese islands. In late August 2026, the region announced an entrepreneurship support program providing 60% subsidies for investment plans between €30,000 and €400,000. This program targets small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in sectors such as tourism, agri-food, fisheries, renewable energy, and green technologies to enhance competitiveness and international presence. Following this, the region, in collaboration with the University of the Aegean and the Center for Training and Lifelong Learning (KEDIVIM), launched a new autumn cycle of the Aegean Skills program. Starting September 7, 2026, this initiative offers six free training courses in diverse fields including first aid, tourism marketing, educational robotics, mindfulness, communication, and emotional intelligence. The program, which features academic supervision from specialized university members and scientific direction by Professor Emeritus Chrysoula Vitsilaki, builds on a successful cycle that saw approximately 1,800 registrations since February 2026. As of late September 2026, these educational programs are being implemented to address contemporary needs in employment, education, and daily life. Participants receive a certificate of participation from the University of the Aegean upon completion. Building on the current cycle, the Aegean Skills initiative is scheduled to launch this, 10 new free educational programs starting were scheduled to launch on October 5. These courses, which last between 32 and 48 hours, will cover 5, covering subjects such as school and cyberbullying prevention, creative writing, digital classroom tools, tourism psychology, and advanced Italian for hospitality. Expanding its focus on local traditions and education, the region, in collaboration with Open Farm, announced the ‘South Aegean Open Farm Days 2026’. Scheduled for October 19 to 25, 2026, the initiative will connect students and educators from the Cyclades and Dodecanese with local agricultural production through workshops and farm visits. The program highlights the connection between local production, gastronomy, and biodiversity, supporting the region’s candidacy for the title of World Gastronomy Region 2028.
