The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) recorded 1.7 million voter-registration interactions during the final weekend of 1–2 August 2026, adding 291,806 new registrations and raising the national roll to over 29 million. Prior to this, the register of political parties had grown from 508 to 620. On 7 August, Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa gazetted the proclamation officially setting the local government elections for 4 November 2026. This date also marked the midnight deadline for voter registration and verification. The IEC has also planned to introduce a new electoral code of conduct to counter disinformation. Following the roll closure, the IEC opened candidate nominations, which must be submitted by 5 pm on 28 August. The provisional voters’ roll was open for public inspection from 11 August to 18 August, with objections considered before the final roll is certified on 26 August. The commission will release voting-station addresses on 14 August and publish the final candidate list on 16 September. As the 28 August nomination deadline passed, political activity has intensified. The Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party announced mayoral candidates for six metropolitan municipalities, including Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, and eThekwini. Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) reported significant fundraising, and the African National Congress (ANC) faced scrutiny regarding donation compliance. Public focus remains on service delivery issues, such as electricity and water shortages, in regions like Mabopane and Soshanguve. To prepare for the November vote, the IEC announced the deployment of nearly 40,000 voter-management devices intended to prevent IT failures. The commission has also implemented a special training programme for staff focusing on queue management, conflict de-escalation, and maintaining voter dignity for elderly citizens. Additionally, the 4 November election date includes a declared public holiday to facilitate voting.
