On 7 August, an ambush in Reiger Park left two SAPS Anti-Gang Unit officers and two women dead, an incident Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi described as a "declaration of war." Concurrently, three separate shooting incidents in the Western Cape's Langa, Gugulethu, and Khayelitsha areas resulted in 11 fatalities. The police union Popcru has since called for a high-priority investigation into the killings of officers.
