South African coastal environmental awards

Overview

South Africa has received various environmental recognitions through the Blue Flag and Green Coast Award Ceremony in Hermanus for the 2026/27 season.

Nationwide, 62 Blue Flag sites were awarded based on international criteria for water quality, safety, and environmental management. In KwaZulu-Natal, the South Coast saw 11 beaches achieve full status, with the Umdoni Municipality increasing its count from one to five. In the Western Cape and Eastern Cape, 50 beaches received full status, including eight specific sites in Cape Town such as Bikini Beach, Camps Bay, and Muizenberg.

In Cape Town, the V&A Waterfront Marina secured its eighth consecutive Full Blue Flag Marina status, noted for its Marine Wildlife Management Programme and daily clean-up operations. Additionally, the Blaauwberg Nature Reserve earned Green Coast recognition for the seventh time, honoring its biodiversity protection and sustainable tourism practices across its 2,000-hectare coastal landscape.
