South American agricultural pest control initiatives

Overview

Agricultural specialists and authorities in South America are implementing various biological and technical strategies to manage pests.

In late September, efforts focused on honeybee health in Nuevo Torino, where workshops addressed the Varroa destructor mite, and in Uruguay, where a native microscopic fungus was introduced as a natural alternative to control the red palm weevil.

By October, regional cooperation expanded. In Mendoza, Argentina, officials hosted Chilean producers to discuss biotechnological tools, such as the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), to combat pests like Drosophila suzukii. Simultaneously, in Ecuador, authorities utilized the beneficial fungus Trichoderma to protect musaceae production against Fusarium Raza 4 Tropical.
