South American community training and employment initiatives

Overview

Mining and utility companies in Peru, Chile, and Uruguay are implementing various community development and employment initiatives.

In Peru, Minera Las Bambas launched a technical training program through the Employability and Development Center to provide masonry, blacksmithing, and formwork instruction to residents of the Cotabambas province. In Chile, the ‘Caldera Impulsa’ initiative, a collaboration between Aguas CAP, Compañía Minera del Pacífico, CORPROA, and the Municipality of Caldera, provides mentorship and financial resources to support local small and medium-sized enterprises.

Further efforts in the region include a renewed agreement in Uruguay between the state energy company UTE and the Institute for Children and Adolescents to provide annual job placements for youth. This program now includes mental health protocols and trajectory monitoring. Additionally, the Collahuasi mining company in Chile is expanding its Apprentices Program in the Tarapacá region, which connects technical education with mining employment, having trained nearly 2,000 individuals since 2009.
