South American meat industry production and pricing
Overview
The South American meat and livestock sectors are experiencing shifts in pricing, production, and feeding research.
In Argentina’s Alto Valle region, the price of bone-in beef (asado) fell by roughly 18% in July, a change linked to the relaxation of sanitary regulations and the partial reopening of the Colorado River barrier. Meanwhile, in Northern Patagonia, research by INTA is investigating forage beet as a low-cost winter feeding alternative to corn for steers. Preliminary findings suggest that while meat from these animals is “very red” compared to corn-fed beef, it retains acceptable tenderness and cooking qualities.
In Paraguay, the Asociación Paraguaya de Productores y Exportadores de Carne (Appec) has raised concerns regarding a possible reduction in slaughter activity. Several meatpacking plants are expected to pause operations for 15 to 30 days in September, leading to fears that decreased industrial activity will lower livestock demand and increase economic pressure on ranchers.
