South American nutrition and climate health initiatives

Overview

Regional health authorities in South America are implementing strategies to address malnutrition and the health impacts of climate change. The Andean Community and the Pan American Health Organization launched a 2026–2030 Work Plan to combat chronic childhood malnutrition and maternal-infant anemia across Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Additionally, the Andean Health and Climate Change Plan 2026–2031 was established to protect approximately 173 million people by strengthening health system resilience against floods, droughts, and rising temperatures.

Individual nations are also developing specific protocols. Paraguay has introduced a preventive protocol through its National School Feeding Council to ensure food security via food kits if climate emergencies force a transition to remote learning. Meanwhile, in Chile, lawmakers are seeking increased prevention measures and budgetary transparency following data showing that 51.7% of evaluated students suffer from excess malnutrition, with 24.8% presenting obesity.
