Police crackdown on vehicle theft and scams in Latin America

Building on the July‑August 2026 raids that seized stolen cars, motorcycles and parts across Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico and Bolivia, law‑enforcement agencies have kept the pressure on theft networks. In early August, Argentine officers stopped two suspects on the Buenos Aires‑La Plata highway, recovered a Honda XR‑150, and later seized additional motorcycles in Avellaneda, Quilmes, Rosario de Lerma and after a public celebration stunt. Chilean detectives used GPS tracking to locate a stolen car hidden in a car‑wash in Ovalle and returned it to its owner. Colombian police again rescued a driver from a fake‑service hijacking, capturing the perpetrator and recovering a Toyota SW4. Mexican municipal police in Bahía de Banderas secured a stolen Jack pickup following a citizen tip. Bolivian authorities dismantled another auto‑parts clan, seizing a vehicle and numerous components. A Peruvian operation recovered a stolen Nissan Avenir linked to an armed gang. These actions show a sustained, region‑wide effort to disrupt organized vehicle‑theft rings, employ intelligence and technology, and return stolen assets to victims.
