South American university space technology projects
Overview
University students in Colombia and Argentina are advancing various space technology and exploration initiatives. In Colombia, students from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia have been admitted to the 2027 International Air and Space Program in Houston. Their research includes an intelligent liquid cooling system for spacecraft computers and methods for recycling astronaut waste to reduce dependency on Earth.
In Argentina, the Universidad Nacional del Comahue is developing the Pehuensat III, a nanosatellite designed as a cube with 10-centimeter sides weighing less than one kilogram. This project, which originated as a thesis topic in 2022, is moving toward final integration. The initiative builds on the university’s history of space research, including the 2007 launch of Pehuensat I.
