South Korea AI policy and industry expansion

Overview

In late July 2026 South Korea began formalising support for strategic AI and semiconductor sectors. Haenam County adopted an ordinance to provide administrative and financial assistance for R&D, industry‑university collaboration, technology commercialisation and talent development, linking the initiative to a national AI computing centre and a massive AI data‑centre investment. The same programme recognised the UAV inspection firm Wiplo, granting it preferential policy‑finance support to grow its defence‑related services domestically and abroad.

A few days later, attention shifted to the financial arena. NH Investment & Securities co‑hosted a seminar on AI‑driven finance, flagging risks such as the “responsibility gap” when AI agents act autonomously. Participants proposed an AI‑agent registration system, data‑access rules for vetted institutions, macro‑level supervision and an open‑banking model treating data as personal assets. Concurrently, other securities firms promoted investment opportunities in emerging sectors, including defence and mobility, while offering retirement‑account incentives. The combined actions illustrate a coordinated push to embed AI across South Korea’s industrial, defence and financial landscapes.
