South Korean agricultural waste management

Overview

South Korea is addressing a significant surge in agricultural waste, including approximately 895,513 tons of waste plastic film and over 235 million pesticide containers generated between 2022 and 2024. High concentrations of waste plastic film were recorded in the Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do regions. The accumulation of these materials has raised concerns regarding soil and water contamination, as well as wildfire risks caused by illegal incineration.

In response to these environmental risks and criticisms regarding management responsibility, local governments have launched specific initiatives. Seongju County established a concentrated collection period for items such as thermal covers and reflective films to reduce the burden on farmers and prevent wildfires. Similarly, Boseong County introduced a shredding support project for agricultural byproducts like pepper and sesame stalks, aiming to convert residues into compost and reduce fine dust and fire hazards.
