South Korean AI initiatives for gambling oversight

Overview

South Korea is exploring the use of artificial intelligence to combat illegal online gambling and address youth gambling addiction. The South Korean Gambling Oversight Committee (SGOC) announced a 2026 roadmap to deploy an AI-based integrated monitoring system. This initiative aims to strengthen detection and blocking mechanisms through collaboration with investigative agencies and platform operators, while also expanding prevention and treatment services for students and military personnel.

Complementing these institutional efforts, youth-led initiatives are also proposing AI-driven solutions. At the 11th Incheon Youth Policy Proposal Forum, adolescents from the Namdong-gu Kkumdeurim Center won the grand prize for ‘D-Trap’ (Gambling Trap). This proposal suggests an experiential platform using virtual money and AI behavior analysis to provide personalized reports and customized prevention training, moving beyond traditional lecture-based education.
