South Korean aviation investment and infrastructure
Overview
South Korea’s aviation sector is undergoing significant shifts in investment and infrastructure development. Initial projections indicated that national aviation safety investment would peak in 2025 at 17.4 trillion won before declining in 2026. This expected decrease is attributed to the adjustment of redundant investments following major airline mergers, such as the integration of Korean Air and Asiana Airlines.
Specifically, Incheon International Airport Corporation has faced a downward trend in safety investment following the completion of Phase 4 construction projects. This reduction has led to concerns regarding the potential exclusion of Phase 5 expansion plans from future development strategies, despite record-high passenger demand.
In a separate development within the Incheon region, Korean Air has partnered with Incheon Metropolitan City and the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority to develop an aviation Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) cluster in Yeongjong. Korean Air plans to invest approximately 150 billion KRW to build engine and component maintenance facilities. Construction is slated to begin in January 2029, with a goal to increase annual engine maintenance capacity from 88 units to approximately 502 units by the end of 2031.
